Stephenville’s undefeated season came to a crashing halt on Saturday as the Yellow Jackets were overpowered by the Ruston Bearcats, suffering a 63-17 defeat. The loss marks Stephenville’s first of the season, dropping their record to 5-1, while Ruston, with the win, improves to 5-0 and extends their home winning streak to 11 games. It was also Stephenville’s lowest-scoring game of the season, unable to find much rhythm against a dominant Bearcats squad.
A High-Scoring First Half
The game was a shootout early on, with both teams combining for eight touchdowns and a field goal in the first half. Ruston led 42-17 at the break, setting the tone with big plays and timely defensive stops. Stephenville’s quarterback, Ryan Gafford, struggled to get his offense going, throwing a critical interception on the Bearcat three-yard line after an early blocked punt had given the Yellow Jackets prime field position. Ruston quickly capitalized, with senior running back Dylone Brooks scoring the game’s first touchdown to take a 7-0 lead.
Stephenville responded with a 55-yard drive but had to settle for a 22-yard field goal to make it 7-3. Ruston then began to pull away, as quarterback Josh Brantley orchestrated two more touchdown drives, including a 20-yard score by Jordan Hayes and a 67-yard bomb to senior wide receiver Joran Parker.
Stephenville’s Brief Surge
Stephenville briefly narrowed the gap in the second quarter when Gafford connected with wide receiver Tristian Gentry on a 31-yard touchdown pass, cutting the lead to 21-10. After a Ruston touchdown extended the lead, Stephenville recovered a muffed punt deep in Bearcat territory, allowing senior running back Sawyer Wilkerson to score from two yards out, bringing the score to 28-17. However, any momentum the Yellow Jackets had was quickly dashed when Ruston’s Aidan Anding returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 35-17.
Ruston’s Second-Half Dominance
Ruston continued to pour it on after halftime, with sophomore receiver Ahmad Hudson adding two touchdowns—a 44-yard catch just before the half and a 56-yard reception early in the third quarter. Backup quarterback Sam Hartwell entered the game in the second half, leading a pair of touchdown drives to further pad Ruston’s lead.
By the end of the game, Ruston had racked up 251 passing yards and 291 rushing yards, showcasing a balanced offensive attack that Stephenville’s defense struggled to contain. Defensively, the Bearcats were equally impressive, with Anding recording an interception and senior linebacker leading the team with four tackles.
A Tough Loss for Stephenville
The 63-17 defeat is a wake-up call for Stephenville, who had cruised through their first five games. Despite the loss, the Yellow Jackets did manage to find the end zone twice, with scores from Wilkerson and Gentry. The team will need to regroup after this humbling loss as they look to rebound in the coming weeks.
For Ruston, the win is another statement in what has been a dominant season. The Bearcats extended their winning streak to 19 games, the longest active streak in the state, and showcased their status as one of the top high school football teams in the country.
Ruston returns home with momentum after completing a tough stretch of games against Texas opponents, while Stephenville will look to bounce back and learn from this lopsided defeat.
