Brennan Stuns Defending Champs with Second-Quarter Surge, Downs Smithson Valley 30-21
SAN ANTONIO — For the second straight year, the Brennan Bears got the best of Smithson Valley — this time spoiling the defending 5A Division I state champions’ 12-game winning streak with a statement-making 30-21 victory Thursday night at Gustafson Stadium.
It didn’t start pretty for Brennan (2-0). The Bears trailed 14-3 early in the second quarter before flipping the game with a flurry of big plays on both sides of the ball.
The rally began when quarterback Cayden Glass capped an 11-play, 75-yard drive with a 2-yard toss to Donivin Lard, pulling Brennan within 14-10. That set the stage for Micai Thompson, who broke free untouched on a 47-yard scoring sprint up the middle to give Brennan its first lead, 17-14, with just 39 seconds left in the half.
The Bears weren’t done. On the very next Smithson Valley series, Jaylen Garner came screaming off the edge for a sack and strip of Rangers QB Ty Knutson, with defensive end Jayden Johnson pouncing on the ball at the 21-yard line. Two snaps later, Glass dropped a perfect strike to Lard in the back corner of the end zone for his second score of the night — a dagger that sent Brennan into the break ahead 23-14.
“That turnover and quick strike changed everything,” head coach Stephen Basore said. “It gave us all the momentum heading into halftime.”
Smithson Valley (1-1) clawed back in the third with an eight-minute, 15-play march ending in Caleb Peagler’s second rushing touchdown of the night, trimming the deficit to 23-21. But Brennan slammed the door in the fourth quarter.
After a long punt return and a costly personal foul on the Rangers, Thompson capped a short field with a 14-yard touchdown run — his second of the game — to put Brennan up two scores with 5:27 to play. From there, the Bears’ defense held firm, turning Smithson Valley over on downs and running out the clock.
Thompson led the charge with 118 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Glass was nearly flawless, completing 15-of-18 passes for 155 yards and two scores — both to Lard, who hauled in nine catches for 90 yards.
Smithson Valley leaned on its stars as Knutson threw for 164 yards, including a 75-yard strike to Hunter Haug, who finished with five receptions for 139 yards. Peagler powered the run game with 72 yards and both Ranger touchdowns.
Brennan now shifts its focus to District 28-6A play, opening against Sotomayor next Saturday at Farris Stadium. Smithson Valley looks to rebound at home against Madison next Friday.
