No. 2 Duncanville Holds Off Late Charge to Edge No. 9 South Oak Cliff, 35-28
DUNCANVILLE — The Friday-night lights burned bright over Panther Stadium, and so did Duncanville’s offense — at least early — as the No. 2 Panthers raced to a big first-half lead and hung on late to defeat No. 9 South Oak Cliff 35-28 in a Texas high school top-10 showdown.
The Panthers (1-0) looked unstoppable out of the gate, exploding for 29 first-half points, forcing two turnovers, and even tacking on a safety thanks to a wild Bears miscue on a punt snap that sailed out of the end zone.
But the Bears (1-1) refused to go quietly. A second-half surge and two fourth-quarter touchdowns cut the deficit to one score, setting up a tense finish before Duncanville’s ground game iced the clock.
Panthers Blitz Bears Early
Duncanville wasted no time setting the tone. Maximus “The Great” Denson capped the opening drive with a strike to Zach Turner for the first score of the night, and the Panthers never looked back — at least for a while.
After the Bears gifted Duncanville two points on a snap gone wrong, Levon Morton briefly gave South Oak Cliff life with a dazzling 78-yard punt return touchdown, but the Panthers answered immediately.
Touchdowns from Brayden Arnold on the ground and Trenton Yancey through the air pushed the Duncanville lead to 22-7 after the first quarter. By halftime, Emmanuel Ellison’s end zone grab stretched the advantage to 29-7, and Panther Nation could already sense victory.
Momentum Swings After the Break
Any thoughts of a rout were silenced early in the second half when South Oak Cliff’s defense tightened up. However, a disastrous fumbled snap on their first possession set Duncanville up at the 1-yard line, and the Panthers punched it in for what would turn out to be their final touchdown of the night, making it 35-14.
From there, the Bears’ defense locked in, forcing punts and creating turnovers — including an interception by Isaish Udom — to keep the game within reach.
Fourth-Quarter Drama
South Oak Cliff turned the final frame into a nail-biter. Devonte Hill caught a 70-yard bomb from Jayden Williams, then Torrin Teague ripped off a long touchdown run out of the Wildcat formation to close the gap to 35-28 with 2:34 left.
But Duncanville’s offensive line and bruising run game came through one last time. Ayson Theus barreled forward on a crucial 4th-and-1 conversion, allowing the Panthers to kneel out the clock and secure the win.
