Columbus Overpowers Malakoff, Claims 3A Division I Title Behind Rigdon’s Four-TD Showcase
ARLINGTON — The Columbus Cardinals saved their best for the brightest lights. On Thursday night at AT&T Stadium, Columbus overwhelmed previously unbeaten Malakoff with a flurry of big plays and a punishing ground game, cruising to a 48–14 victory in the Class 3A Division I state championship.
Rigdon Runs Wild
The spotlight belonged to running back Grayson Rigdon. The junior shredded Malakoff’s defense for 119 rushing yards and four touchdowns, finding the end zone from 3, 2, 13, and 2 yards out. His performance tied the second-most rushing touchdowns ever recorded in a Class 3A title game, etching his name into UIL history.
Balanced Attack
While Rigdon churned out scores on the ground, quarterback Adam Schobel carved up the Tigers through the air. Schobel completed 15 of 21 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns, keeping Malakoff guessing all night. He also tucked one in himself, sneaking across the goal line for a 2-yard score in the second quarter.
By halftime, Columbus had built a commanding 34–7 lead, leaving little doubt about the outcome.
Malakoff’s Push
The Tigers, who entered the game 15–0, found the end zone twice. Jason Tennyson powered in for a rushing touchdown, and Jerrion Hall added another. But aside from those moments, Malakoff had no answers for Columbus’ relentless pace and physicality.
Statement Victory
Columbus capped its season at 15–1, bringing home a state championship in emphatic fashion. With Rigdon rewriting record books and Schobel directing a high-octane offense, the Cardinals didn’t just win — they dominated.
Final: Columbus 48, Malakoff 14 — Cardinals crowned champions in convincing fashion.
