The lights weren’t on and the scoreboard stayed dark, but Southlake Carroll and Waxahachie still gave Texas high school football fans plenty to chew on during their preseason scrimmage.
The Dragons, pegged by many as an early state title favorite, wasted no time showing off their firepower. Quarterback Angelo Renda looked sharp, dropping dimes to his go-to weapons Brock Boyd and Brody Knowles, who each turned in highlight-worthy grabs. On the ground, Carroll leaned on senior tailback Davis Penn, running behind the muscle of veteran lineman Carey Clayton, to keep the chains moving.
Waxahachie countered with its own star power. Wideout Kohen Brown, the Texas Longhorns pledge, flashed the skill set that made him one of the most coveted receivers in the state. Lining up alongside him, the versatile Jayquan Snell showcased athleticism that will give opposing defenses headaches all season.
With no official score tallied, it was the open series that provided the clearest look at what’s ahead. Both teams revealed why they’re being talked about as playoff threats: Carroll with its depth and polish, Waxahachie with its explosive playmakers.
It was only a scrimmage, but the message was clear—these two programs won’t just be showing up on Friday nights, they’ll be making plenty of noise deep into the fall.
