Aledo Bearcats Dominate Tascosa, Advance in Class 5A Playoffs
The Aledo Bearcats, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A Division I and reigning state champions, delivered a commanding 62-7 victory over Tascosa in the regional semifinals at Grant Teaff Tiger Stadium on Friday. The Bearcats scored on every one of their nine offensive possessions, leaving no doubt about their championship pedigree as they cruised into the next round of the playoffs.
A First-Half Showcase
Aledo wasted no time asserting dominance. By the end of the first quarter, the Bearcats led 21-0, and by halftime, the score had ballooned to 49-0. Junior quarterback Gavin Beard orchestrated a nearly flawless offensive performance, completing all 15 of his passes for 275 yards and four touchdowns. Beard didn’t see the field in the second half, having already led his team to touchdowns on all seven first-half drives.
Senior wide receiver Blake Burdine provided an early spark, hauling in a 31-yard touchdown pass on a 4th-and-8 play during Aledo’s opening drive. That precision passing play set the tone for the Bearcats’ relentless offensive barrage.
Junior running back Kaden Winkfield took over in the absence of star rusher Raycine Guillory Jr., who left the game early with a minor ankle injury. Winkfield carried the ball 12 times for 145 yards and three touchdowns, including scoring runs of 57 and 39 yards, before also sitting out the second half.
Total Domination on Both Sides
Aledo’s defense matched the offense’s intensity, suffocating Tascosa’s triple-option attack. The Rebels, playing without starting quarterback Coltyn Fulton due to a torn ACL, managed just 25 total yards in the first half and didn’t cross midfield until their final drive in the fourth quarter.
Junior fullback Tendrick Sargent led Tascosa with 55 rushing yards on 13 carries, but the Rebels couldn’t generate sustained drives, earning only four first downs all game—three of which came from penalties.
Tascosa’s lone bright spot came with six seconds left in the game when junior running back Reese Cabe broke free for a 14-yard touchdown run to avoid the shutout.
Reflecting on Tascosa’s Season
Despite Friday’s lopsided loss, Tascosa’s season was a testament to perseverance. After starting the year 1-3, the Rebels rallied to reach the third round of the playoffs. Head coach Ken Plunk acknowledged the challenge of facing Aledo, saying, “Our chance to stay in it was to match them score for score. We didn’t do that, and they overmatched us today.”
The Rebels finish their season at 7-6, proud to have represented their region as the last remaining 5A team from the 806 area.
Aledo Eyes Another Title
With the win, Aledo improves to 12-1 and appears primed to defend their state title for a third consecutive year. The Bearcats, winners of 11 UIL championships in the last 15 seasons, once again demonstrated why they are among Texas high school football’s elite programs.
As Aledo marches deeper into the playoffs, their efficient offense and stifling defense make them the team to beat. One thing is clear: the Bearcats are on a mission to add another trophy to their already storied legacy.
