Argyle Dominates Walnut Grove to Extend Playoff Streak
Argyle High School continued its postseason dominance Friday night, securing a convincing 52-35 victory over the Walnut Grove Wildcats in a third-round playoff matchup. The Eagles, riding high on a 12-game winning streak, showcased their offensive firepower and defensive resilience, cementing their reputation as a 5A powerhouse.
The game began with a flurry of scoring from both teams. Walnut Grove, fresh off two thrilling playoff victories, matched Argyle’s energy early, resulting in a 21-14 Eagles lead after the first quarter. However, the second quarter was all Argyle. The Eagles’ defense tightened its grip, forcing critical stops and three fumbles, while their offense capitalized with 21 unanswered points. By halftime, Argyle held a commanding 42-14 advantage.
The Eagles’ offensive juggernaut was led by quarterback Maguire Gasperson, who had a stellar performance with 188 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a career-high 76 rushing yards, including another touchdown on the ground. Running back Watson Bell added to the scoring spree, rushing for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Argyle shone just as brightly. The trio of Gage Prepula, Xavier Sanchez, and Maxwell Bland each recovered a fumble, while Sanchez delivered a season-high 14 tackles. Garrett Westrom contributed 11 tackles, including one for a loss. Their collective effort stifled Walnut Grove’s offense during critical moments.
Though the Wildcats fell short, standout performances highlighted their resilience. Running back Cameron Newton led the charge with 94 rushing yards, three touchdowns, and 34 receiving yards, while quarterback Hayes Hackney threw for an impressive 329 yards and a touchdown. Walnut Grove’s effort was commendable but ultimately not enough to overcome Argyle’s dominant display.
In the second half, Walnut Grove showed determination, tightening their defense and holding Argyle to just three points in the third quarter. They also chipped away at the deficit, entering the fourth quarter down 45-21. Despite a late-game surge, the Wildcats couldn’t close the gap, ending their season with an 11-2 record.
Argyle’s victory improves their record to 12-1 and marks their fifth consecutive road win, with the team averaging 46.4 points per game during this streak. Their ground game reached new heights, racking up a season-best 304 rushing yards.
Looking ahead, Argyle faces a formidable challenge against the Lovejoy Leopards in the next round. Lovejoy, coached by Todd Dodge, has consistently put up 31 or more points in each of their last 11 games. The matchup is set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday and promises to be a thrilling battle between two high-scoring teams.
For Walnut Grove, the loss signals the end of a remarkable season but also sets the stage for a bright future. With a young, talented roster gaining valuable playoff experience, the Wildcats are poised to make deeper postseason runs in the years to come.
