Argyle Eagles Surge Past Lovejoy Leopards in Playoff Clash
The Argyle Eagles powered their way to a 42-17 victory over the Lovejoy Leopards in the Class 5A Division I regional finals Friday night at Prosper ISD Children’s Health Stadium. The decisive win extended Argyle’s winning streak to 13 games and ended Lovejoy’s season with a 10-4 record.
Lovejoy struck first with a 43-yard field goal by Cooper Ryan and later took a 10-7 lead after Jacob Janecek connected with Daylan McCutcheon for a three-yard touchdown pass. However, Argyle quickly found their rhythm, scoring 35 unanswered points across the second and third quarters to seize control.
Quarterback Maguire Gasperson led Argyle’s offense with 142 passing yards, including a 73-yard touchdown to Julian Caldwell, and added a rushing touchdown. Argyle’s defense also shined, with Max Bland forcing a key fumble and Grayson Peschel returning an interception 81 yards for a touchdown.
Despite the loss, Lovejoy showed resilience. McCutcheon led the offense with 131 receiving yards and a touchdown, while James Markovich and Gavin Prince each forced fumbles to keep Argyle on edge. Freshman Coleman Reaugh added a late touchdown catch in the fourth quarter.
Lovejoy’s season came to an end in the regional finals for the fourth time in five years. Meanwhile, Argyle advances to face South Oak Cliff in the state semifinals on December 13, eyeing a return to the championship stage.
