Highland Park Tops Lone Star, Advances to State Semifinals
Highland Park overcame an early stumble to defeat Frisco Lone Star 41-28 in the 5A Division I regional final Friday at Ford Center. The Scots’ balanced attack and resilient defense carried them to their 10th consecutive double-digit victory and a spot in the state semifinals.
Sophomore quarterback Buck Randall shook off two early interceptions to deliver a commanding performance. Randall threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns while adding 124 rushing yards and another score. After a slow start, Randall’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Cannon Bozman ignited a scoring spree, with Highland Park capitalizing on five of their next six possessions.
Highland Park’s defense rose to the occasion against Lone Star’s explosive offense, which had averaged nearly 48 points per game. Jack Morse and Jack Steed each intercepted Lone Star quarterback Karece Hoyt, disrupting his otherwise stellar 386-yard, three-touchdown effort. The Scots’ defensive discipline proved critical in keeping Lone Star in check.
Highland Park’s offense tallied 414 yards, with running back James Lancaster adding 111 rushing yards on 17 carries. This balanced attack allowed the Scots to maintain control and wear down Lone Star’s defense.
With a 13-1 record, Highland Park advances to face the winner of the Denton Ryan vs. Aledo matchup in the state semifinals. Their consistency and ability to overcome adversity have solidified their status as a top contender for the state title.
Lone Star ends their season at 12-2, falling short despite a strong offensive campaign. For Highland Park, the focus now shifts to maintaining their momentum in the championship chase.
