The essence of South Oak Cliff (SOC) football goes beyond the game itself—it’s a culture, an attitude that permeates everything they do. From the way they carry themselves to the confidence displayed in their play, SOC stands out.
As reigning champions in Class 5A Division II, doubts lingered about their ability to return to the championship stage this season amidst the rise of new contenders. Yet, their recent 38-30 victory against Melissa at the Ford Center in the area round showcased their unwavering determination.
Coach Jason Todd, leading a team that believes it holds the longest playoff winning streak in Texas football, sees the true honor not just in securing a title but in defending it week by week when challenges arise.
Defeating Melissa, a highly regarded contender, only solidified SOC’s status as a force to reckon with. Next, they face Midlothian Heritage in the regional semifinal, a team that staged an impressive comeback in their last game.
SOC faced hurdles in their recent win, surrendering ground in the second quarter after a strong start. However, they rallied, scoring 21 points in the second half to secure the win. Senior running back Danny Green shone with an impressive 128 yards and three touchdowns, aided by Khalill Ewell and quarterback William Little’s contributions.
For SOC, being champions means everyone aims to dethrone them. Still, they maintain focus, treating every opponent with equal respect and staying grounded.
Melissa, despite their loss, exhibited resilience. Senior quarterback Trever Ham’s performance, with three touchdowns, showcased their grit. Melissa, with only two losses this season including one against SOC last year, displayed their mettle throughout the game.
SOC, a powerhouse in their district, looks to maintain their distinct style. With a track record of recent championships and a roster boasting six Division I pledges in the Class of 2024, they stand firm in their unique approach to the game—South Oak Cliff football.
