Westlake’s Defense Shines in 24-7 Victory Over Brennan to Advance in Playoffs
Westlake’s playoff tradition continued on Friday at Burger Stadium, as the Chaparrals turned in a dominant defensive performance to defeat San Antonio Brennan 24-7. This victory in the Class 6A Division I playoffs marked the Chaparrals’ annual appearance in a Thanksgiving weekend game since 2015, and they’ll move on to the third round, where they’ll face either Los Fresnos or Buda Johnson.
A Defensive Masterclass
Westlake’s defense was the story of the game. Coming into the matchup, Brennan had been averaging over 44 points per game, but the Chaparrals stifled their high-powered offense from the start. Senior middle linebacker Elliott Schaper was a standout performer, making key stops throughout the night and sealing the win with an interception in the fourth quarter. Schaper’s play was a testament to the Chaps’ defensive discipline, as they never allowed the Bears to get comfortable.
Defensive lineman Cullen Devine also contributed in a big way, not only helping to stymie Brennan’s offense but also hauling in his first career touchdown. Devine caught a 2-yard pass from quarterback Rees Wise in the first half, putting the Chaparrals up by two scores.
Special Teams Play a Crucial Role
The Chaparrals’ special teams also played a pivotal role in the victory. Hayes Brodhead blocked a punt, setting up Westlake deep in Brennan territory. This led to the game’s first touchdown, giving the Chaparrals an early lead and putting the Bears on the back foot. Brennan’s struggles were compounded by two special teams mistakes that allowed Westlake to score easy touchdowns and control the tempo of the game.
Offensive Resilience
While Westlake’s offense didn’t light up the scoreboard, they were efficient when needed. Junior quarterback Rees Wise, who didn’t have his best performance throwing the ball, showed tremendous resilience with two rushing touchdowns. His 3-yard run in the second quarter gave Westlake a comfortable lead, and his leadership helped manage the game through tough situations.
Brennan’s Lone Spark
Brennan’s only significant offensive play came in the fourth quarter. After a 75-yard scramble by receiver Melvin Khan, the Bears set up at the 1-yard line, where quarterback Cayden Glass pushed it in for a touchdown. Khan finished the night with five receptions for 87 yards, but the Chaparrals’ defense made sure that was the only real explosive play Brennan could muster. Despite the Bears’ efforts, they were unable to get back into the game, with Westlake’s defense continuing to dominate.
Looking Ahead
With the win, Westlake improves to 4-0 all-time against Brennan, extending their playoff dominance over the Bears. They now turn their attention to the next round, where they will face the winner of Los Fresnos vs. Buda Johnson. The Chaparrals’ defensive effort and special teams play set the stage for another potential deep playoff run, continuing their postseason tradition with a strong 24-7 victory.
Final Thoughts
Westlake’s defensive prowess and timely special teams plays were too much for Brennan to overcome in this playoff clash. While the offense didn’t explode for big numbers, the Chaparrals’ ability to capitalize on mistakes and control the game with tough defense and solid playmaking proves they are a serious contender moving forward.
