Westlake Overpowers Buda Johnson in Dominant Playoff Victory
The Westlake Chaparrals extended their playoff march with an emphatic 52-14 win over the Buda Johnson Jaguars on Friday at Burger Stadium. Westlake’s well-rounded performance, featuring explosive offense and a stingy defense, overwhelmed a resilient Johnson team that saw its season end with an 8-5 record.
Early Momentum Sets the Tone
Westlake wasted no time seizing control of the game. After recovering a muffed kickoff deep in Johnson territory, the Chaparrals settled for an early field goal but quickly found their rhythm. By halftime, Westlake had built a commanding 38-7 lead, capitalizing on a series of big plays.
Senior Brandon Clark, typically a defensive back, stepped into the offensive backfield due to injuries and shined. He scored twice in the first half, including a 51-yard breakaway touchdown — his first offensive score. Quarterback Rees Wise added two rushing touchdowns and connected on a touchdown pass, demonstrating his dual-threat capabilities.
Johnson’s Bright Spots
Despite the lopsided score, Buda Johnson displayed moments of brilliance. Running back Kael Hatnot continued his stellar season with a 60-yard touchdown run, his fourth consecutive game with over 115 rushing yards. Later, quarterback Zach Isaak electrified the crowd with a 62-yard touchdown run in the second half.
The Jaguars’ ground game proved effective, amassing 212 rushing yards. It marked their third straight game surpassing the 200-yard rushing mark, a testament to their commitment to a physical offensive identity.
Defensive Dominance
Westlake’s defense, however, was unrelenting. The unit limited Johnson’s passing attack and added to the scoring with a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown by Nate Kay in the fourth quarter. The Chaparrals capitalized on turnovers and consistently pressured the Jaguars, disrupting their rhythm.
Closing Out the Season
Buda Johnson’s playoff run ended after a commendable season in which they secured key victories over Laredo United and Los Fresnos. Finishing fourth in District 29-6A, the Jaguars demonstrated growth and resilience, particularly in their postseason performances.
Head coach Aaron Holton reflected on the season: “We’re proud of how far we’ve come. This team fought hard, and we’ll build on this experience moving forward.”
What’s Next for Westlake
Westlake, now 12-1 and riding a 10-game win streak, advances to face district rival Lake Travis in the next playoff round. Both teams bring momentum, with Lake Travis coming off a dominant 52-7 win over San Antonio East Central. Their upcoming clash promises to be a high-stakes battle between two Central Texas powerhouses.
Bottom Line
Westlake’s playoff machine showed no signs of slowing down, blending offensive versatility and defensive strength to dismantle a determined Buda Johnson squad. While the Jaguars’ season concludes, the Chaparrals remain focused on their ultimate goal: another deep postseason run.
