Guyer Overpowers McKinney to Advance in Playoffs
The Guyer Wildcats showcased their dominance in a 52-30 victory over the McKinney Lions during the Class 6A Division II bi-district playoffs on Friday night at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex. With a relentless ground game, explosive plays, and defensive prowess, Guyer took control early and weathered McKinney’s late surge to secure their spot in the next round.
Setting the Tone Early
Guyer wasted no time establishing its rhythm, scoring on the opening drive when quarterback Kevin Sperry connected with Mason White for a 34-yard touchdown. Sperry followed up with a short pass to tight end Jackson Shockley, who turned it into a 33-yard score. By halftime, the Wildcats had built a commanding lead, capitalizing on McKinney’s struggles to contain both the pass and the run.
Sperry, a senior committed to Oklahoma, was the engine of Guyer’s offense. He completed 5 of 7 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 100 yards on 14 carries. His dual-threat ability kept McKinney’s defense on its heels throughout the game.
Ground Game Dominates
Guyer’s rushing attack was nearly unstoppable, racking up 276 yards. Junior running back Kaedyn Cobbs led the way with 99 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries, scoring from distances of 18, 7, and 1 yard. The Wildcats also found the end zone on the ground with contributions from DJ Reese and Grant Hatfield, each adding short rushing touchdowns.
The balanced offensive attack kept McKinney’s defense guessing and allowed the Wildcats to control the pace of the game.
Defense Shines Despite Late McKinney Rally
Defensively, Guyer held McKinney to just 65 rushing yards and forced three turnovers, including two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Senior defensive back Jonah Shamy and junior linebacker Caleb Fowler each grabbed an interception, with Fowler also contributing multiple tackles for loss. The Wildcats’ pressure on McKinney’s quarterback proved pivotal in keeping the Lions’ offense at bay for most of the night.
While McKinney managed two late fourth-quarter touchdown passes to cut into the deficit, their efforts fell short. Standout performances from the Lions’ Khristian Mackintrush, who recorded 155 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Jeremiah Daoud, who threw for 277 yards and three scores, provided bright spots for the visitors.
Moving Forward
Guyer improved to 8-3 with the victory and has now won five of its last six games. The Wildcats will face Richardson Pearce (9-2) in the area round of the playoffs, with details on the matchup still to be announced. McKinney, whose season ends with a 6-5 record, showed resilience but couldn’t overcome Guyer’s multifaceted attack.
Final Thoughts
Guyer’s potent offense and stingy defense have them primed for a deep playoff run. With Kevin Sperry leading the way and a strong supporting cast on both sides of the ball, the Wildcats are clicking at the right time. However, cleaning up a few missed opportunities and sustaining their defensive intensity will be key as the competition stiffens in the weeks ahead.
