Saturday’s showdown at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium wasn’t just another game for Summer Creek’s football team; it was an opportunity to etch history. The Bulldogs seized that chance with a thrilling 35-31 comeback victory over Hightower in the Region III-6A Division II final, clinching their first-ever trip to the state semifinals.
Trailing 31-20 with only 6 minutes and 46 seconds remaining, the Bulldogs orchestrated an impressive turnaround, outscoring the Hurricanes 15-0 down the stretch. Senior running back Lloyd Avant, committed to Tulsa, sealed the deal with a decisive 1-yard touchdown run with just 21 seconds on the clock.
The pivotal moment arose from a turnover on downs by Hightower around midfield, stemming from a miscommunication on a fake punt. The Hurricanes’ attempt to switch the play was lost in translation, leading to Summer Creek’s crucial possession.
Coach Kenny Harrison praised his team’s resilience, stating, “The one thing I’m most proud of is, at halftime when we were down, our kids did not panic. They always had that look like they knew we were going to win the game.”
The game saw explosive plays from both sides, with Hightower leading 21-17 at halftime on the back of several significant gains and opportunistic defense. Junior defensive back Michael Amey’s interception return for a touchdown extended Hightower’s lead, but Summer Creek’s response was swift. Senior tight end Kordell Rodgers’ touchdown narrowed the Bulldogs’ deficit.
However, a pivotal moment arose when Hightower opted for a fake punt but faltered due to a communication lapse, allowing Summer Creek to capitalize and orchestrate a game-winning drive in the closing minutes.
Hightower, vying for its first state semifinal appearance since 2011, fell short despite a solid performance. Summer Creek’s Avant, with 139 yards and three touchdowns, emerged as a standout player alongside Rodgers’ clutch catches.
With the win, Summer Creek advances to face Cibolo Steele or Dripping Springs in the state semifinal next Saturday at McLane Stadium in Waco, setting the stage for another high-stakes matchup.
