Summer Creek Shocks North Shore with Defensive Masterclass, Claims Share of District 23-6A Title
HOUSTON — The scoreboard at Galena Park ISD Stadium told a story few expected to see. When the final horn sounded Friday night, Humble Summer Creek had silenced one of Texas’ most explosive offenses in a 27-0 rout of Galena Park North Shore, seizing a share of the District 23-6A championship and making a statement that will echo into the postseason.
North Shore, a powerhouse averaging 56 points per game, was shut out for the first time in years. Summer Creek’s defense owned the night, swarming quarterback Kaleb Maryland and turning every drive into a battle for survival.
Bulldogs Set the Tone Early
Summer Creek opened the game with confidence, choosing to receive the kickoff and immediately putting the Mustangs on their heels. After trading punts early, kicker Patrick Cleveland drilled a 31-yard field goal midway through the first quarter to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 edge.
Moments later, quarterback Noah Spinks began to find his rhythm. The senior orchestrated a crisp 63-yard drive, highlighted by a 40-yard burst from Keshawn Jackson, then capped it off with a 3-yard touchdown pass to four-star receiver Benny Easter Jr.. Cleveland’s extra point made it 10-0, and the Bulldogs were off and running.
North Shore Stumbles Through the First Half
North Shore never found its footing. Maryland’s deep throws narrowly missed, a blocked field goal halted their best drive, and a tipped pass turned into an interception inside the red zone just before halftime. Summer Creek’s defensive front, led by Brinley Tita and Amontre Harris, won the line of scrimmage on nearly every snap.
By the break, the unthinkable was unfolding: North Shore trailed 10-0 and had yet to reach the end zone.
Summer Creek Defense Dominates After Halftime
The Bulldogs didn’t let up in the second half. Cleveland added a 37-yard field goal late in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 13-0. Then came the game’s biggest moment.
On the ensuing possession, North Shore mishandled a kickoff and started deep in its own territory. Maryland, under pressure, tried to throw across his body from the end zone. Summer Creek cornerback Savion Jones read it perfectly, snatching the ball at the 20 and returning it untouched for a pick-six. The crowd erupted as the Bulldogs’ sideline celebrated a 20-0 lead.
Putting It Away
Any hope of a North Shore comeback vanished early in the fourth quarter when Jackson bulldozed across the goal line for a 2-yard touchdown. The score made it 27-0, and from there, the Bulldogs’ defense closed the door.
Harris added his second sack of the night, while PJ Cormier and Caleb White each contributed key stops that kept North Shore from gaining traction.
The Aftermath
When it ended, Summer Creek players mobbed their coaches in celebration. The Bulldogs (9-1, 6-1) had delivered one of the biggest wins in program history, matching North Shore atop the district standings and proving they belong in the state title conversation.
North Shore (8-2, 6-1) will have to regroup quickly. The Mustangs’ offense, led by Utah State commit Kaleb Maryland, had no answers for Summer Creek’s relentless pressure and tight coverage.
Spinks finished with two touchdown passes and managed the game with poise, while Easter Jr. continued his breakout season as one of the state’s premier playmakers.
As the playoffs approach, one thing is clear: Summer Creek’s defense can stand with anyone in Texas.
