West Mesquite rolled into Saturday’s playoff round carrying confidence from a dominant regular season, but the momentum hit a wall the moment Lone Star found its rhythm. The Wranglers took a tough 47 to 20 defeat, their lowest scoring output of the year and a reminder of how unforgiving November football can be.
Even in the loss, Jaylen Dotson delivered flashes of what fueled West Mesquite’s surge all season. The Wrangler quarterback tossed three touchdowns and finished with 124 passing yards, battling to keep his team within reach.
Lone Star, however, had an answer for everything. Sophomore sensation Trey Wright stole the spotlight with a balanced explosion of offense, slicing through the defense for 107 rushing yards and a touchdown on only eight carries, then stretching the field with 196 passing yards and two more scores. Every time Lone Star needed a spark, Wright provided one.
The setback sent West Mesquite to an 11 and 2 finish, snapping an 11 game tear that had turned heads statewide. Lone Star, meanwhile, marches forward at a flawless 13 and 0, looking every bit like a title contender.
