Vista Ridge faced its first defeat of the season in a close 7-6 loss to the McNeil Mavericks in a recent 6A-District 26 clash. Despite an undefeated start, Vista Ridge couldn’t secure the win, primarily due to McNeil’s defensive prowess and strategic play.
In a game primarily dominated by defensive efforts, Vista Ridge managed to take an initial lead with two field goals by Clarence Deiparine, giving them a 6-0 advantage in the first half. However, McNeil swiftly responded with a remarkable play—a 26-yard hook-and-lateral executed by Jarell Gary and Joshua Gayden, resulting in the match’s only touchdown.
McNeil’s defense showcased its strength throughout the game, notably securing three interceptions, including two crucial ones in the first half. Their defensive efforts played a pivotal role in shifting the momentum and ultimately sealing the win.
A strategic move by Gary in the final moments of the game, opting to take a knee at the 3-yard line rather than scoring, allowed McNeil to control the clock and secure the victory.
This win was significant for McNeil, marking a positive turnaround from last year’s performance, surpassing their previous season’s win record with a 3-2 overall standing. On the other hand, Vista Ridge remains close to achieving its previous season’s five-win record, needing one more victory to match it.
Looking ahead, McNeil faces Vandegrift in their upcoming game, aiming to build on their recent success. Vista Ridge will take on Westwood in their next matchup, seeking to rebound after their first loss and aiming to reach their win record from the previous season.
