Westlake Triumphs Over Lake Travis in Battle of the Lakes
The Westlake Chaparrals edged out the Lake Travis Cavaliers 24-17 in a thrilling 6A Division I Region IV championship matchup on Friday at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex. This marks Westlake’s sixth consecutive victory over their rival and advances them to the state semifinals for the eighth straight year.
Both teams started strong, trading scores on their opening drives. Lake Travis struck first with a 55-yard pass to Josiah Thomas, setting up a two-yard touchdown run by Vann Hopping. Westlake quickly responded, highlighted by a 37-yard pass to Cash Robin, capped by quarterback Rees Wise’s five-yard scramble. By halftime, Westlake held a 17-10 lead.
The Cavaliers tied the game at 17 in the third quarter with a six-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Colby. However, Westlake’s Rees Wise connected with Brandon Clark for a decisive 17-yard touchdown in the final frame.
Westlake’s defense sealed the game, forcing three turnovers in the Cavaliers’ last five possessions. Defensive back George Jones III clinched the win with a late interception, while linebacker Elliott Schaper recorded two picks and lineman Cullen Devine forced a fumble recovered by Masen Bliss.
The Chaparrals improved to 13-1 and extended their winning streak to 11 games. Next, they face North Shore in the state semifinals, aiming to overcome their past defeats to the Mustangs. Meanwhile, Lake Travis concludes their season with a 12-2 record and a five-game winning streak snapped by their longtime rival.
