
Buda Johnson faced a relentless Lake Belton in an intense clash that saw a pivotal 14-point surge from the Broncos, leading them to secure a hard-fought 51-44 victory over the Jaguars at Bob Shelton Stadium.
Lake Belton’s head coach, Brian Cope, commended Johnson’s substantial improvement over the past year, acknowledging the Jaguars’ exceptional performance throughout the game.
Unlike their previous game affected by a power outage, Lake Belton’s Friday encounter was free of such disruptions, allowing the action-packed contest to unfold. The game witnessed thrilling moments and numerous twists and turns, making it a must-watch spectacle.
With a tied score and eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, Johnson managed to level the playing field with a 24-yard field goal by Joe Margiotta. However, the Broncos swiftly responded with a six-play drive culminating in a 9-yard touchdown run by quarterback Eli Mascarenas, putting Lake Belton ahead 44-37 with 6:26 on the clock.
Lake Belton’s Kellen Scarborough forced a crucial fumble on the ensuing kickoff, recovered by Caleb Santana, setting the stage for Cameron Hamilton’s 2-yard TD plunge, extending their lead to 51-37 with 3:39 remaining. Despite Bryan Forsberg’s 10-yard TD reception, closing the gap to 51-44 for Johnson, Lake’s Micah Hudson secured the onside kick, ensuring victory for the Broncos.
Coach Cope emphasized the importance of resilience and discipline, expressing satisfaction with his team’s response in the face of adversity. He acknowledged the need for continued improvement and discipline in preparation for their upcoming game against Red Oak on ESPN.
Eli Mascarenas exhibited exceptional performance, completing 15 of 21 passes for 267 yards and four touchdowns, while also contributing with two rushing TDs. Micah Hudson and Cash Robin were instrumental in the receiving game, making significant plays for Lake Belton.
Despite Johnson’s valiant efforts, including a standout performance by Carson McMullin and Kael Hatnot, Lake Belton’s prowess on both sides of the ball allowed them to secure a hard-fought victory, exhibiting resilience and determination throughout the game.
