DeSoto’s football team put on a remarkable display in a game that showcased their prowess, mirroring some of the best performances witnessed in the state this season. However, an unfortunate off-field incident prematurely halted an impressive victory over South Oak Cliff on Saturday.
In a commanding performance, Darius Bailey led the charge, amassing 256 passing yards and four touchdowns, all achieved within the first half. DeSoto’s defense also played a pivotal role, notching an impressive 18 tackles for loss, securing a dominant 54-14 lead in a showdown between defending state champions at Kincaide Stadium.
The game came to an abrupt end with 6:29 remaining due to a disturbance among fans on the DeSoto side, prompting referees to terminate the game, as confirmed by Dallas ISD spokeswoman Robyn Harris. Both teams swiftly retreated to their locker rooms following the incident, and the Dallas ISD police department, as a precautionary measure, ordered the fans to vacate the stadium. Notably, there were no reports of gunshots, weapons found, or injuries sustained.
In the aftermath, DeSoto coach Claude Mathis revealed that both him and South Oak Cliff coach Jason Todd mutually agreed to conclude the game, prioritizing safety over the continuation of play.
The dominant performance by DeSoto, ranked No. 2 in The Dallas Morning News’ Class 6A area poll and No. 3 in the Associated Press’ 6A state poll, displayed their prowess despite a two-week hiatus following their season-opening win against Allen. The team extended their unbeaten record against South Oak Cliff to 4-0, while South Oak Cliff (1-2) faced its most significant defeat since 2019.
DeSoto’s first-half dominance was evident, securing a commanding 47-0 lead and boasting a staggering total yardage advantage of 488 to -16.
Bailey’s precision in the passing game was exceptional, highlighted by explosive plays, including a 74-yard scoring connection with Daylon Singleton. Defensively, DeSoto exhibited sheer dominance, tallying 14 tackles for loss in the first half, with standout performances by Jason Douglas and Stanford commit Brandon Booker.
The game’s intensity unfortunately led to South Oak Cliff quarterback William Little exiting after a sack early in the game, affecting their offensive rhythm. DeSoto capitalized on their defensive prowess, securing seven sacks in the first half, causing a pivotal setback for South Oak Cliff.
Moreover, DeSoto showcased a multifaceted offense with two players, Jaden Trawick and Marvin Duffey, each surpassing 100 rushing yards and contributing significantly to the team’s commanding performance.
Before kickoff, a moment of silence paid tribute to John Kincaide, the stadium’s namesake and a trailblazing figure in Dallas ISD sports history, honoring his legacy after his recent passing at the age of 90.
