DeSoto Dominates Willis, Advances to Fifth Straight Regional Final
In a rematch of last year’s semifinal, the DeSoto Eagles once again prevailed over the Willis Wildkats, securing a commanding 55-35 victory on Saturday to end Willis’ perfect season and 12-game winning streak. The win propels DeSoto into their fifth consecutive regional final, keeping their pursuit of a third straight Class 6A Division II state championship alive.
A Tale of Two Halves
The game began with Willis riding high, as quarterback Jack Emerson orchestrated two quick scoring drives. A rushing touchdown from Jermaine Bishop Jr. and a receiving score by Jalen Mickens gave the Wildkats an early edge. But DeSoto adjusted quickly, unleashing their relentless ground game and wearing down Willis’ defense.
By halftime, the Eagles had completely flipped the script, scoring 42 unanswered points across five consecutive drives. DeSoto’s offensive explosion was led by star running back Deondrae Riden Jr., who carried the team with four rushing touchdowns, continuing his record-breaking season.
Willis’ Late Push
Despite falling behind, Willis showed resilience in the second half, putting together a run of 21 straight points. Emerson shone once again, throwing for two long touchdowns, including a highlight-reel catch by running back Terri Lawrence III. However, their quick scores left DeSoto with plenty of time to respond.
The Eagles opened the fourth quarter with another Riden touchdown, sealing the game and maintaining control until the final whistle.
Star Performances
Deondrae Riden Jr., a Texas A&M commit, was unstoppable for DeSoto, rushing for 254 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 7.3 yards per carry. He wasn’t the only standout for the Eagles—SaRod Baker contributed 162 yards and two touchdowns on just 15 carries, adding another dimension to the team’s potent offense.
On the other side, Willis quarterback Jack Emerson delivered a remarkable effort despite the loss. He threw for 453 yards and five touchdowns, maintaining his streak of three or more passing touchdowns in each of his last 11 games. Lawrence also shined with 111 receiving yards and a touchdown, showcasing his versatility as both a receiver and rusher.
Looking Ahead
The loss brought Willis’ remarkable season to an end with a 12-1 record, highlighting the challenges of translating regular-season success into postseason wins.
As for DeSoto, their victory extends their win streak to seven games, improving their record to 11-2. Next up, the Eagles will face Longview in the 6A Division II Region 2 final at McLane Stadium on Saturday. With both teams entering the contest with two losses on the year, the stage is set for a high-stakes battle.
DeSoto’s ability to score at will—they’ve posted at least 31 points in each of their last seven games—ensures an electrifying matchup. Longview will need to brace for DeSoto’s dynamic offense, led by Riden, as the Eagles aim to take another step toward a third straight state championship.
