In McKinney’s home game against Flower Mound, the Lions’ defense faced some tense moments, tasked with containing an offense that had been averaging an impressive 39.5 points in its initial two games. Flower Mound came close to seizing a couple of touchdown opportunities and made several incursions into the Lions’ territory.
Despite the pressure, McKinney’s defense displayed resilience and opportunism. It forced five turnovers from Flower Mound and restricted their offensive output to 270 yards in a commanding 30-13 victory at McKinney ISD Stadium. This victory maintained McKinney’s flawless record at 3-0, while Flower Mound, aiming for their first 3-0 start since 2009, dropped to 2-1 with a bye week on the horizon.
Amidst the on-field action, off-field news also unfolded for McKinney.
McKinney ISD announced that head coach Marcus Shavers had been cleared to resume his coaching duties on Saturday morning following an internal investigation. Shavers had been on paid administrative leave since August 31, absent from coaching the Friday game or the previous week’s match against Richardson Berkner.
The Lions swiftly took control of the game and never trailed. Utilizing a dual-quarterback strategy for the third consecutive week, McKinney rotated between senior Godspower Nwawuihe and sophomore Jeremiah Daoud. Daoud’s exceptional throwing ability set the tone early as he connected with junior Khristian Mackintrush for a 55-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.
Daoud contributed 123 passing yards and two touchdowns while Nwawuihe managed 49 passing yards and led the rushing attack with 106 yards and one touchdown. McKinney’s ground game, bolstered by Ja’Tavious Greer and Makhi Frazier, amassed a total of 250 rushing yards in the game.
Although Flower Mound had opportunities to level the score, missed chances and a crucial fumble inside McKinney’s territory limited their impact. Their lone touchdown until the final minutes came from a trick play, a double reverse resulting in a touchdown pass from Jake Watson to Noah Erdman, tying the game at 7-7 in the second quarter.
However, Flower Mound struggled to penetrate McKinney’s defense for the majority of the game. Watson faced formidable resistance, managing 171 passing yards but struggling to break through the Lions’ defensive line and secondary.
McKinney capitalized on Flower Mound’s errors, converting turnovers into crucial points. A missed field goal from Flower Mound and interceptions by junior Riley Pettijohn and senior Kevin Brown significantly altered the game’s momentum, allowing McKinney to extend their lead and secure a convincing 30-13 victory.
