Southlake Carroll Stays Perfect, Edges Hebron in Playoff Thriller
The Southlake Carroll Dragons maintained their unbeaten record with a hard-fought 42-37 victory over the Hebron Hawks in a Class 6A playoff clash on Friday night. The win, which keeps Southlake Carroll at a flawless 13-0, also marked their second triumph over Hebron this season, though this rematch was far closer than their 59-16 rout in September.
Early Fireworks and Key Performances
Hebron came out determined to prove they could compete with the Dragons, and quarterback Patrick Crayton Jr. put on a show. Crayton accounted for all five of Hebron’s touchdowns, rushing for 77 yards and four scores while throwing for 224 yards and another touchdown. His connection with wide receiver Drew Koster, who recorded 91 receiving yards, kept the Hawks in the fight.
However, Southlake Carroll’s offense was equally unstoppable. Quarterback Angelo Renda delivered a standout performance, throwing for 304 yards and two touchdowns while adding 103 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. His favorite target, wide receiver Brock Boyd, torched Hebron’s secondary for 227 receiving yards and a touchdown, providing the spark the Dragons needed to stay ahead.
Defensive Stands
While the game was defined by offensive fireworks, Southlake Carroll’s defense made crucial plays to seal the win. The Dragons’ defensive line wreaked havoc in Hebron’s backfield, recording seven sacks. Zac Hays and Austin Davidge combined for 4.5 sacks, with Hays continuing his streak of five or more tackles in three consecutive games. Marcus Brouse also played a pivotal role, contributing 1.5 sacks and ten total tackles.
The Turning Point
The Hawks held their own in the first half, but Southlake Carroll’s ability to sustain drives and apply defensive pressure made the difference. The Dragons’ seven sacks disrupted Hebron’s rhythm, forcing the Hawks to rely heavily on Crayton’s individual brilliance. While Hebron clawed back late, it wasn’t enough to overcome Southlake Carroll’s offensive balance and defensive dominance.
Looking Ahead
The victory extends Southlake Carroll’s remarkable run to 13 straight home wins, with an average margin of victory of 44.5 points. Up next for the Dragons is a regional final showdown against the Guyer Wildcats at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Both teams bring explosive offenses, with their recent games combining for over 900 total yards, setting the stage for another high-octane battle.
For Hebron, the loss ends an impressive season at 8-5, which included a four-game winning streak leading into the playoffs. Despite the defeat, Crayton Jr.’s standout performance caps a memorable year, highlighting his importance to the Hawks’ success.
A Clash to Remember
Southlake Carroll continues to look like a championship-caliber team, blending high-powered offense with a relentless defensive front. Their resilience against Hebron showcases their ability to adapt and thrive under pressure—a key attribute as they move deeper into the postseason.
