In the 5A Division II semifinals, anticipation mounts as the stage is set for the clash between the Frisco Emerson Mavericks and the South Oak Cliff Golden Bears. The matchup, scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. in Frisco, epitomizes the newcomer’s drive against the reigning champions’ quest for a three-peat.
Emerson stamped their arrival in the state semifinals with a resounding 59-48 triumph over Colleyville Heritage last week, an impressive feat considering it’s only their second varsity season. Meanwhile, South Oak Cliff maintained their dominant form, securing a convincing 42-0 win over Lovejoy in the regional final, continuing their imposing run.
The Mavericks showcase a dynamic quarterback-receiver partnership with Oklahoma commit Michael Hawkins and Texas State commit Kylen Evans leading the charge. Hawkins’ stellar season includes 2,878 passing yards, 1,108 rushing yards, and a remarkable 53 total touchdowns, featuring an impressive 40 passing touchdowns against a mere two interceptions. Evans, his primary target, showcased prowess with eight catches for 196 yards and two touchdowns in the recent victory. Supporting their aerial threat is running back Izzy Bills, boasting 1,250 rushing yards at an average of 7.4 yards per carry.
On the South Oak Cliff front, expect reliance on their potent running back duo, Khalil Ewell and Danny Green Jr., both surpassing 1,000 yards rushing this season. The Golden Bears flaunt an array of receiving weapons, including talents like Arizona State commit Elijah Baesa, Texas Southern commit Rickey Evans, and Texas Tech commit Trey Jackson. Their defensive lineup is formidable, bolstered by standouts like Louisiana Monroe commit linebacker Brandon Jones, three-star linebacker Jayden Shelton, and North Texas commit Kerry Williams.
Emerson’s high-octane offense poses a challenge for any opponent, yet their ability to consistently move the ball against South Oak Cliff’s staunch defense remains uncertain. The Mavericks’ willingness to engage in a shootout presents an intriguing scenario, but their capacity to contend against South Oak Cliff’s defensive prowess is yet to be tested. The clash promises a compelling showdown as Emerson strives to disrupt the reigning champions’ pursuit of a historic three-peat.
