Lone Star Survives Reedy’s Scare, Keeps Perfect Season Alive
FRISCO — The Lone Star Rangers had cruised through the regular season without much drama, but Thursday night brought a rare test. The Reedy Lions gave them all they could handle before Lone Star escaped with a 28-26 victory to preserve its unbeaten record.
For the first time all year, the Rangers found themselves in a fight deep into the fourth quarter. Their offense sputtered compared to its usual standards, posting its lowest point total of the season, but their defense rose to the occasion when it mattered most.
Dominguez Dominates the Line of Scrimmage
Sophomore defensive standout Marcel Dominguez delivered a performance for the ages. He racked up 5.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss, single-handedly wrecking Reedy’s protection schemes and halting multiple drives. His effort sparked a defensive front that finished with 9.5 total sacks, leaving the Lions battered and unable to sustain momentum late.
Dominguez has been unstoppable in recent weeks, recording at least two sacks in four straight games. On Thursday, he looked every bit like one of the most disruptive young defenders in Texas.
Reedy’s Push Falls Just Short
Reedy came in red-hot, riding a five-game win streak and showing no fear against the district’s top team. The Lions’ offense managed to keep pace early, moving the ball effectively through the air and on the ground. But each time they threatened, Lone Star’s defensive front slammed the door.
When the final whistle blew, Reedy’s comeback hopes faded, dropping them to 7-3 on the season.
Playoff Picture Coming Into Focus
With the win, Lone Star improved to 10-0, wrapping up the regular season with a perfect record and plenty of momentum heading into the postseason. The Rangers will open the playoffs Thursday night against North Mesquite at 7 p.m., facing a Stallions squad averaging more than 31 points per game over its last four contests.
Reedy will regroup quickly as it prepares to take on Creekview, also on Thursday at 7 p.m., in a chance to bounce back and regain confidence before the playoffs begin.
The Rangers may have been tested, but once again, they found a way to finish. And as long as that defense keeps hunting quarterbacks, Lone Star remains one of the toughest outs in Texas high school football.
