Patriots Fall Short in Thriller Against Laredo LBJ
LAREDO – Mission Veterans Memorial went toe-to-toe with undefeated Laredo LBJ on Friday night, but when the dust settled, the Patriots were on the wrong end of a 28-27 heartbreaker.
The Patriots actually outgained the Wolves by 55 yards, but LBJ made its opportunities count, using a balanced attack to stay perfect on the season.
Reyna Lights It Up
Mission Veterans Memorial quarterback Roman Reyna nearly willed his team to victory, turning in a spectacular all-around effort. Reyna threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns, then added another score with his legs on a 68-yard rushing performance. He has now thrown three or more TD passes in every game this season.
The Patriots’ secondary did its job too, holding LBJ’s quarterback to just 46.2% completions, thanks in part to standout efforts from Ryan Guerra and JJ Garza, who combined for four pass breakups.
Wolves Stay Perfect
Laredo LBJ leaned on its own playmakers to keep the comeback at bay. Quarterback Vicente Robles accounted for nearly 300 total yards and two touchdowns – one through the air and one on the ground. Running back Mauricio Lopez powered the Wolves’ run game with 65 yards and two key rushing scores that proved to be the difference.
Looking Ahead
The loss drops Mission Veterans Memorial to 3-1, snapping their unbeaten streak. They’ll look to bounce back quickly when they host Harlingen on Thursday night.
Laredo LBJ, now 4-0, heads into another home matchup against Del Rio, where their offense will get a crack at a Rams defense giving up 37 points per game – setting the stage for another potential shootout.
