Weslaco Survives Memorial’s Yardage Barrage, Wins 31-24
McALLEN — The numbers told one story, but the scoreboard told another. Despite outgaining Weslaco by more than 100 yards, McAllen Memorial couldn’t finish drives when it mattered, falling 31-24 in a Friday night thriller.
Panthers’ Playmakers Shine
The Panthers’ offense ran through Chris Luna, and he delivered under the bright lights. The junior quarterback put together a near-perfect night, completing 85% of his passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 74 yards and another score on just nine carries.
Special teams added fireworks of their own as DeAngelo Gonzalez electrified the crowd with a kickoff return touchdown that swung momentum in Weslaco’s favor.
Mustangs Show Fight
Memorial wasn’t short on big performances. Kane Coy did a bit of everything — throwing for 132 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 54 yards and two more scores. Running back Braxton Speights powered the ground attack with 131 rushing yards, helping the Mustangs pile up yardage even as the points didn’t follow.
Clutch Moments Decide It
The Mustangs twice pulled within striking distance, but the Panthers’ defense bowed up in the red zone, forcing key stops late in the game. Gonzalez’s special teams score proved to be the difference-maker, stretching Weslaco’s lead just enough to hold off Memorial’s final push.
