Speights Runs Wild as McAllen Memorial Handles Rival McAllen
McALLEN – For the second straight year, the city showdown belonged to the Mustangs.
McAllen Memorial flexed its muscle on the ground once again Friday night, rolling past rival McAllen High 35-21 to stretch its winning streak to three games and improve to 4-2 on the year.
The win mirrors last season’s outcome, when Memorial also took care of business against the Bulldogs.
Speights Steals the Show
Few backs in South Texas are hotter than Braxton Speights. The senior tailback was nearly untouchable, torching the Bulldog defense for 297 yards and three touchdowns, averaging a blistering 12.9 yards per carry.
It was his biggest scoring night since September of last season and another reminder of why he’s one of the region’s most dangerous playmakers.
Complementing the star back was Jorge Munoz, who added 77 yards and a touchdown, helping Memorial rack up 467 rushing yards as a team their highest total of the season.
The Mustangs have now eclipsed 200+ rushing yards in every game this year, continuing to make life miserable for opposing front sevens.
Bulldogs Battle but Fall Short
McAllen (3-3) hung around early but couldn’t slow down Memorial’s ground assault.
Quarterback McCoy Wolthoff provided the spark for the Bulldogs’ offense, throwing for 129 yards and a touchdown while adding 68 yards and another score on the ground.
Still, a pair of stalled drives in the second half proved costly as Memorial’s run game chewed up clock and yardage alike.
The loss marked McAllen’s second straight and ended an unusual trend the road team had won each of the previous four meetings in the rivalry.
