On Friday night, Duncanville and DeSoto, two Texas high school football powerhouses, squared off in a highly anticipated showdown. The top-ranked Duncanville Panthers delivered a decisive 42-20 victory over the DeSoto Eagles, maintaining their undefeated record after five games this season.
The standout performance of the night came from the electric connection between Duncanville quarterback Keelon Russell and wide receiver Dakorien Moore. Russell threw for 429 yards and six touchdowns, completing 72% of his passes, with Moore accounting for 241 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Russell’s ability to evade pressure and extend plays helped him rack up impressive numbers, including a career-high-tying six touchdown passes, matching his performance two weeks earlier. This game continued Russell’s streak of three or more touchdown passes in six consecutive games dating back to last season.
DeSoto, despite a well-rounded effort, couldn’t overcome Duncanville’s offensive firepower. Myson Johnson-Cook had a notable contribution with 72 rushing yards and a touchdown on just five carries, while Kelden Ryan added 94 yards on the ground. However, penalties plagued DeSoto throughout the game, much like in their earlier loss to North Crowley. Several critical flags negated big plays, including a 61-yard touchdown run by Ryan that was nullified due to an illegal block.
Duncanville’s dominance was clear early on, taking a commanding 28-6 lead at halftime. Moore, the nation’s No. 1 wide receiver and an Oregon commit, was unstoppable in the first half, scoring four touchdowns on just five catches for 179 yards. DeSoto’s lone first-half score came on an 88-yard kickoff return by Daylon Singleton.
DeSoto mounted a valiant comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, trimming the deficit to 35-20 with a 49-yard touchdown run from Johnson-Cook. The Eagles’ defense then forced a crucial stop, giving their offense a chance to narrow the lead further. After a promising 18-yard pass from Ryan to Singleton moved DeSoto into the red zone, their momentum crumbled when a high snap resulted in a 26-yard loss. A subsequent interception by Duncanville’s Jaylyn Manning ended DeSoto’s hopes of a comeback.
For Duncanville, this win was another statement in their pursuit of a district title in the highly competitive 6A District 11, considered one of the toughest in Texas. They have now won six of the last seven meetings against DeSoto, although the overall series, dating back to 2004, still favors DeSoto at 11-7. The Panthers have now extended their road winning streak to four games, improving their season record to 5-0. DeSoto, on the other hand, saw its three-game winning streak snapped, leaving them with a 4-2 record.
The penalties that derailed DeSoto’s offense in the first half forced them to rely heavily on the passing game in the second half, limiting the effectiveness of Texas A&M pledge Deondrae Riden Jr., who was held to just 39 yards in the first half.
Next week, Duncanville travels to face Lancaster in Week 8, while DeSoto takes on Horn, as both teams continue their march through the season in pursuit of district titles and deep playoff runs.
