In an ESPN televised showdown, Red Oak’s clash against Lake Belton turned into a high-octane thriller that had fans on the edge of their seats.
The dramatic finale unfolded as quarterback Reggie Moody connected with receiver Dylan Gayton in the endzone on a nail-biting 4th and 17 play. This last-minute touchdown in overtime sealed Red Oak’s heart-stopping 37-34 victory over Lake Belton, captivating the audience at Tiger Field in Belton, Texas, on Thursday night.
The game saw Red Oak facing a pivotal moment, opting to go for a final fourth-down attempt instead of relying on their kicker, who had struggled with multiple missed PATs and a field goal earlier, including a failed game-winning PAT attempt in regulation.
Moody’s heroics were instrumental throughout the game, culminating in an outstanding performance with 427 passing yards and six total touchdowns. The decisive play occurred on a critical 4th and 17 situation in overtime, with Red Oak trailing by three in this gripping back-and-forth encounter.
Although Red Oak spent much of the game trailing, they managed to tie the score at 31-31 with just 14 seconds remaining in regulation. Moody’s 46-yard touchdown pass to receiver Taz Williams Jr. leveled the playing field, setting the stage for a potential game-winning PAT, which unfortunately failed due to a low snap, forcing the game into overtime.
Lake Belton initiated the extra period with a drive that reached inside the 10-yard line, resulting in a field goal by Tommy Stephens, extending Lake Belton’s lead to three.
In a thrilling sequence, Red Oak, trailing by six with under seven minutes left, couldn’t convert but persisted in their pursuit. Rodney Malone Jr. made a spectacular play, securing an 81-yard touchdown reception from Moody, narrowing the gap to just six points.
Lake Belton, spotlighted on national television due to standout player Micah Hudson, a 5-star receiver, showcased their prowess. However, Red Oak, led by Williams Jr., a 3-star junior receiver, and Kamauryn Morgan, a 4-star junior edge rusher, exhibited formidable talent.
This contest mirrored their thrilling previous encounter in Week 3 of the previous season, which Red Oak clinched in overtime with a 48-47 victory. Hudson’s pivotal role in that game emphasized his standing as one of the nation’s top uncommitted recruits.
The exhilarating showdown between Red Oak and Lake Belton lived up to the hype, leaving a trail of breathtaking moments and demonstrating the sheer intensity of high-stakes high school football.
