The Allen and Lewisville football teams found themselves in a familiar showdown, meeting for the second consecutive year in the bi-district playoffs. Despite changes over the past year, the stage was set for a rematch. Allen, seeking redemption after their previous season’s defeat, managed to turn the tables in a rain-soaked, defensive battle, claiming an 18-17 victory over last year’s Region I-6A finalists.
Head coach Lee Wiginton commended his team’s resilience and growth since the end of the last season. He praised their camaraderie, improvement, and dedication, acknowledging the challenging journey they’ve undergone together.
Once again, Allen put up 18 points against Lewisville’s formidable defense. However, it was Allen’s own defense that proved pivotal, holding off the 6-6A runners-up to a mere three points in the second half. The Eagles dominated defensively, limiting Lewisville’s offensive yards significantly, particularly in the latter part of the game.
Zina Umeozulu, Allen’s senior defensive end, highlighted their determination to display dominance, crediting the collective effort of the defensive front. They effectively disrupted Lewisville’s offense, stifling their running game and keeping their quarterback under immense pressure.
Despite being restricted to just 170 yards on offense and facing setbacks like losing their starting quarterback to injury, Allen relied on their defensive prowess and special teams to maintain field advantage.
Brady Bricker, Allen’s junior quarterback, made impactful plays before his injury, including a touchdown run that nudged the Eagles ahead. However, the team adapted, with senior Dylan Chapman and sophomore Brett Holloway stepping in to manage the offense for the remainder of the game.
The game witnessed pivotal moments, such as Caleb Smith’s impressive kickoff return for a touchdown and crucial field goals that helped Allen secure the lead. Though Lewisville fought back, Allen’s defense held firm, limiting their opponent’s opportunities in the second half.
With this victory, Allen advances to face Arlington Martin in the area round, setting the stage for a familiar matchup after their previous win against them during non-district play. For Lewisville, the loss marks the end of their season, falling in the bi-district round for the first time since 2019. Allen’s triumph reflects their resilience and sets the stage for another challenging yet promising playoff encounter.
