In a tense showdown against Jesuit in Thursday’s Class 6A Division II area playoff, Coppell running back O’Marion Mbakwe found himself seeking just a couple of yards on a late rush attempt. Little did he know, that carry would become the defining moment of the game, propelling his team to a crucial victory.
Mbakwe burst forward for a spectacular 57-yard touchdown run with only 4:13 remaining, granting Coppell a 35-23 lead. His subsequent 32-yard sprint on a fourth-and-two play with a single second left on the clock solidified Coppell’s triumph at 42-23, a score that belied the intensity of the matchup at the Ford Center at The Star.
Reflecting on his pivotal plays, Mbakwe revealed, “My initial thought before the first touchdown was just to secure a first down. But as soon as I saw the opportunity, I took it all the way to the end zone.”
Coppell heavily relied on Mbakwe’s heroics, especially as Jesuit staged a third-quarter rally. Jesuit managed to narrow the gap, scoring consecutive touchdowns, with the second one— a six-yard pass from Charlie Peters to Jaeger Krauss—bringing the score to 28-23 with 3:20 remaining in the third quarter. However, Jesuit’s hopes were dashed when a 40-yard field goal attempt missed its mark, leaving Coppell in control.
Following Mbakwe’s crucial touchdown, Coppell’s defensive lineman Momeen Abbasher thwarted Jesuit’s final attempt with a fourth-and-one stop at the Coppell 44-yard line, sealing the win with just 2:43 left on the clock.
With this victory, Coppell (11-0), ranked No. 6 in The Dallas Morning News’ Class 6A area poll and No. 19 in the Associated Press 6A state poll, moves on to face the winner of Friday’s contest between Trophy Club Byron Nelson and Midland in a Region I semifinal next week. This advancement marks Coppell’s first appearance in the regional semifinals since 2017, and their pristine 11-0 record marks a milestone not achieved since 2012.
Expressing his pride in the team’s performance, Mbakwe stated, “It feels incredible to be part of this team and contribute to the changes we’re making in the district and the city. We’re making history together.”
Jesuit (8-4) suffered a third consecutive defeat in the area-round playoffs, marking the eighth time they’ve bowed out at this stage since 2012.
