Hurt’s Heroics Lift Johnson Past Reagan in OT Thriller
SAN ANTONIO – For Johnson senior running back Rayshun Hurt, Friday night’s “Stone Oak Super Bowl” was more than just a rivalry game it was redemption.
A year removed from wearing Reagan green, Hurt made sure his new colors came out on top, powering the Jaguars to a stunning 34-27 overtime win over the Rattlers at Heroes Stadium.
From Heartbreak to Hero
Trailing 27-17 with just 2:24 left, it looked like Reagan had sealed the deal after kicker Andre Salazar drilled a 51-yard field goal. Some Johnson fans began filing toward the exits but they should’ve stayed in their seats.
On the very next snap, Hurt exploded through the defense for a 75-yard touchdown, slicing the deficit to three and breathing life back into the Jaguars’ sideline.
Johnson’s defense followed with a critical stop, forcing a Reagan punt to give the offense one more shot. Taking over at their own 42 with 56 seconds remaining, the Jaguars marched methodically downfield, setting up Ethan Joshua, who calmly knocked through a 27-yard field goal as time expired to tie it at 27-27.
Overtime Glory
When the extra period began, there was no doubt who would get the call. Hurt finished the job with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone, giving Johnson the lead for good. The defense shut the door on Reagan’s final possession to preserve the victory and keep the Jaguars’ perfect 6-0 record intact, including 3-0 in District 27-6A.
Hurt carried the load all night, rushing 28 times for 160 yards and four touchdowns, cementing his place in Johnson lore.
Reagan Fights, But Falls Short
For the Rattlers (2-4, 2-1), it was a bitter loss in a game they controlled for long stretches. Reagan dictated tempo with time-consuming drives and physical defense, even taking a 14-7 halftime lead after blocking a Johnson field goal attempt in the final seconds of the second quarter.
Their early momentum came courtesy of Ayden Fernandez, who punched in two short touchdown runs. Reagan’s defense also forced a critical fumble on a botched snap that led to the opening score.
But when the lights burned brightest, Johnson’s defense delivered first on Reagan’s final drive in regulation, then again in overtime.
A Rivalry That Defines the District
Since 2019, the winner of this heated rivalry has gone on to claim the District 27-6A crown and if history holds true, the Jaguars may be on their way.
