In a highly anticipated matchup between two of Houston’s top teams, the #2-ranked Atascocita Eagles edged out the #3 Summer Creek Bulldogs 42-39 in a Friday night thriller. The Eagles’ victory, their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season, improved their record to 5-0, while Summer Creek’s loss ended their four-game winning streak, dropping them to 4-1.
The game started with Summer Creek missing an early scoring opportunity as they failed to convert a field goal on their opening drive. Atascocita immediately capitalized when running back Tory Blaylock broke free for an 89-yard rushing touchdown on their first play, setting the tone for a high-scoring contest.
The Eagles’ defense then forced a punt after a big sack, and quarterback Cardae Mack wasted no time, connecting with wide receiver CJ Toney for a 52-yard touchdown to extend the lead. Summer Creek responded by a 48-yard touchdown run from Eugene Burnett. However, Blaylock struck again for Atascocita with a 67-yard rushing touchdown, ending the first quarter with the Eagles leading 21-7.
In the second quarter, Summer Creek’s offense faltered, turning the ball over on downs. Atascocita capitalized again with a 15-yard rushing touchdown from Toney after a long run by Mack. Summer Creek’s offensive struggles continued, and Atascocita took advantage once more as Mack sprinted for a 52-yard touchdown run, giving the Eagles a commanding 35-7 lead at halftime.
Summer Creek came out strong in the second half, forcing a quick three-and-out and then getting on the scoreboard again when Blake Thomas connected with Benny Easter for a 25-yard touchdown. Atascocita’s offense stalled, and Summer Creek quickly seized momentum with Braylin Causey punching in a 1-yard touchdown after a long drive, cutting the lead to 35-14.
Atascocita failed to convert on a fourth down, giving the ball back to Summer Creek, who continued to chip away at the lead. The Bulldogs kicked a field goal early in the fourth quarter and then scored again when Causey broke free for a 31-yard touchdown run. A successful two-point conversion made it 35-32, and Summer Creek wasn’t done yet.
Blake Thomas led a strong drive, hitting Tre Brown with a pass that brought the Bulldogs into the red zone. Thomas finished the drive himself with a 12-yard rushing touchdown, giving Summer Creek its first lead of the night at 39-35.
With the clock winding down and facing pressure, Atascocita needed a late-game surge. After a key sack by Summer Creek, it looked like the Bulldogs might hold on for the win. But Mack found a crucial first down and followed it up with a long pass to Toney, keeping Atascocita’s hopes alive. A pivotal fumble recovery by the Eagles put them in prime scoring position, and with just 12 seconds left, Blaylock powered into the end zone from 2 yards out, sealing the 42-39 victory.
Despite the loss, Summer Creek’s Blake Thomas had a standout performance, throwing for 250 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 112 yards and another score. Causey added 81 rushing yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Atascocita’s explosive offense, led by Blaylock and Mack.
Atascocita remains undefeated as they look ahead to their next challenge, while Summer Creek will seek to bounce back after a heartbreaking loss.
