Three Darkhorse 6A Teams to Watch in 2024
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

As the Texas high school football season heats up, the spotlight tends to focus on perennial powerhouses. However, in the vast landscape of 6A football, there are always a few dark horses ready to surprise the state. This year, Cibolo Steele, Houston Lamar, and Mesquite Horn are emerging as teams to watch, each possessing the potential to make a deep run and challenge for the 6A state championship.

Cibolo Steele: The Resilient Knights

Cibolo Steele has long been a formidable force in Texas high school football, but this season, the Knights are flying slightly under the radar. With a history of strong playoff performances, Steele is poised to make another significant impact.

Strengths: The Knights’ success can be attributed to their solid defense and dynamic offense. Under the leadership of head coach David Saenz, Steele’s defense has been particularly impressive, showcasing a mix of aggressive pass rush and disciplined coverage. Offensively, the Knights have a potent combination of experienced skill players and a versatile quarterback who can exploit defenses both through the air and on the ground.

Key Players: Keep an eye on quarterback Chad Warner and Wide Receiver Jalen Cooper. Warner’s dual-threat capability adds an extra dimension to Steele’s offense, while Cooper’s explosive style makes him a constant threat to break off big plays.

Path to Glory: If Steele can maintain its defensive prowess and capitalize on its offensive opportunities, the Knights could well overcome the traditional favorites and seize the 6A state title. Their ability to perform in high-pressure situations will be critical as they navigate through the tough playoff landscape.

Houston Lamar: The Underdog with Potential

Houston Lamar, traditionally not always in the upper echelons of 6A football, is emerging as a team to watch this season. The Texans are showing signs of a breakout year, with a mix of young talent and seasoned players.

Strengths: Lamar’s defensive unit has been particularly noteworthy this year, demonstrating resilience and a knack for making crucial stops. Their secondary, in particular, has been effective at shutting down opposing passing games, which is essential in the high-stakes playoff environment. Offensively, Lamar boasts a balanced attack that can adapt to different defensive schemes.

Path to Glory: Houston Lamar’s success will hinge on their ability to execute under pressure and maintain their defensive intensity. If they can continue to perform at a high level and harness the momentum from their strong performances, the Texans could very well make a deep playoff run.

Mesquite Horn: The Rising Stars

Mesquite Horn is another team that’s been flying under the radar but has shown considerable promise this season. The Jaguars have been steadily improving and are beginning to capture attention as a potential contender.

Strengths: Horn’s offense has been explosive, with a high-scoring attack that can put points on the board quickly. Their offensive line has done an excellent job of protecting the quarterback and opening lanes for the running game. On defense, the Jaguars have been effective at creating turnovers and disrupting opposing offenses.

Path to Glory: For Mesquite Horn, the key to a successful playoff run will be their ability to maintain their high-powered offense and improve their consistency on defense. If the Jaguars can capitalize on their offensive strengths and shore up any defensive weaknesses, they could very well make a splash in the playoffs.

As the Texas high school football season progresses, Cibolo Steele, Houston Lamar, and Mesquite Horn are all dark horse candidates with the potential to make a significant impact in the 6A state championship race. Each team possesses unique strengths and key players that could propel them to the top. While the traditional powerhouses remain formidable, these up-and-coming teams are worth watching as they vie for a shot at the state title. In the world of Texas high school football, surprises are always around the corner, and these three teams are certainly primed to deliver.
