
In a clash of reigning state titans, Duncanville emerged dominant against South Oak Cliff in a season opener relocated to SMU’s Gerald J. Ford Stadium due to scorching temperatures that caused an hour-long delay. The defending Class 6A Division I champions, Duncanville, showcased their prowess, securing a commanding 34-13 victory over 5A DII victors, South Oak Cliff.
The Panthers (1-0), ranked No. 6 in the SBLive/Sports Illustrated national Power 25 and sitting atop Texas rankings, wasted no time setting the tone. LSU-bound tailback Caden Durham swiftly bolted 68 yards for a touchdown within the first 43 seconds of the game. Despite a blocked PAT, Duncanville surged to a 6-0 lead.
The momentum continued on their next drive as receiver Dakorien Moore capitalized on a swing pass from quarterback Keelon Russell, dashing 79 yards for another Panthers’ touchdown. However, their conversion attempt failed, maintaining their lead at 12-0 with 7:11 remaining in the opening quarter.
Russell added to the Panthers’ lead with two long touchdown passes before halftime, showcasing his precision. The first, a 71-yard connection with Moore, followed by a 55-yard strike to sophomore receiver Ayson Theus. Russell’s efficiency in the first half, completing 11-of-14 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns, set the tone for Duncanville’s dominance.
Adding to their lead late in the third quarter, Russell notched his fourth touchdown, an 89-yard play to Moore, extending Duncanville’s advantage to 34-13.
The Panthers boast a roster teeming with talent, including Durham, Russell, and Moore, key contributors in their quest for consecutive titles. Additionally, their defensive prowess is fortified by 5-star edge rusher Colin Simmons, a Texas commit.
South Oak Cliff (0-1) battled bravely, securing two first-half field goals from Diego Varela. The Bears exhibited resilience in the second half, orchestrating a 20-play, 67-yard drive culminating in William Little’s 9-yard touchdown pass to Trey Jackson, narrowing the deficit to 14 points. Despite their efforts, Duncanville’s early offensive firepower set the tone for their victory in this high-stakes matchup.
