Southlake Carroll Surges Past Guyer to Claim Regional Title
Southlake Carroll mounted an impressive comeback in the Class 6A Division II Region I championship, defeating Denton Guyer 56-45. Trailing 14-0 early in the game, the Dragons capitalized on turnovers and special teams heroics to secure their second consecutive regional title and keep their undefeated season alive.
The game began with adversity for Carroll, as a fumbled opening kickoff set up Guyer’s Kevin Sperry for a 20-yard rushing touchdown. Moments later, a 43-yard strike from Sperry to Mason White extended the Wildcats’ lead. Undeterred, Carroll responded with two five-yard rushing touchdowns from Christian Glenn to level the score.
Special teams proved to be the turning point. Ethan Fisher’s blocked punt recovery for a touchdown gave Carroll a 21-14 lead at halftime. The Dragons capitalized on two additional bad punt snaps by Guyer, turning defensive and special teams plays into critical scores.
Despite being outgained offensively—533 yards to 298—Carroll made their limited opportunities count. Glenn led the charge with three rushing touchdowns, while the defense stepped up late, highlighted by Parker Harris’s game-sealing interception in the final minute.
For Guyer, Sperry’s stellar performance of 303 passing yards and four touchdowns wasn’t enough to overcome their miscues. The Wildcats ended their season at 10-4, while Carroll advanced with a perfect 14-0 record.
Next, Southlake Carroll faces Longview in the state semifinals. As the Dragons chase their first state championship since 2018, their ability to capitalize on opponent mistakes and maintain composure under pressure will be tested against a formidable Longview squad.
