In a thrilling repeat of their state championship victory, the Bears of South Oak Cliff displayed resilience and determination to secure their second consecutive UIL state title—a historic achievement for a Dallas ISD school.
The game initially saw the Indians take charge, racing to an early 17-5 lead. However, the Bears, determined to cement their place in history, orchestrated a remarkable comeback. South Oak Cliff turned the tide, seizing a 17-12 lead in the first half.
The pivotal moments unfolded in the third quarter as the Bears showcased their grit, scoring an impressive 19 points, including a crucial safety that evened the score. Fuelled by their momentum, South Oak Cliff’s quarterback, Williams Little, powered through with a 3-yard run, granting the Bears a definitive 24-17 lead that they fiercely guarded till the end.
The Bears’ defense played a pivotal role in securing their victory. Manny Muhammad’s spectacular 41-yard interception return for a touchdown, coupled with Diego Vareia’s 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter—his third of the game—solidified South Oak Cliff’s lead and sealed their triumph.
Port Neches-Groves’ running back, Isaiah Nguyen, delivered an impressive performance, amassing 154 yards on 22 carries. Despite Nguyen’s efforts, the Bears’ resilience and tactical prowess prevailed, cementing their place in history as back-to-back champions.
