Lone Star Survives Melissa 35-30, Stays Perfect
Ten seconds in, Lone Star was already on the board. That’s how fast this district opener got rolling, and the Rangers never let it slow down, even when Melissa made them sweat every step of the way.
Frisco Lone Star held off a feisty Melissa squad 35-30 at Coach Kenny Deel Stadium, improving to 4-0 and staying firmly in the state title conversation behind another huge night from USC commit Trey Wright.
Wright opened the scoring almost immediately, hitting Zach Forbish for a 75-yard bomb just 10 seconds into the game. Melissa answered with a 14 play drive capped by a Turner Wilkie sneak to tie it, but Lone Star had answers all night long. Wright found Karece Hoyt for a 28-yard score, then connected with Colen Perry from 58 yards out on the very next play after forcing a Melissa punt, pushing the lead to 21-7.
Melissa kept chipping away, a 40-yard touchdown pass cutting the gap, but Wright wasn’t done either. He broke off a 69-yard scoring scramble just 12 seconds into the second quarter, giving him four total touchdowns before halftime and a commanding 28-14 lead at the break.
The Cardinals refused to go quietly in the second half. Bear Tabor hauled in a touchdown to make it 28-21, and Wright had to answer one more time, scoring his fifth total touchdown of the night to open the fourth quarter and push the lead back to 14.
Melissa kept swinging. Turner Wilkie scored again to cut it to seven, setting up a tense final few minutes. Lone Star tried to ice it on fourth and long but came up just short, giving Melissa one more shot. That’s when Clemson commit Bryant Robinson stepped up, picking off his second pass of the night with just over a minute left to seal the win. Melissa managed a safety in the closing seconds, but it was too little, too late.
Wright finished with a ridiculous 393 total yards and five touchdowns, throwing for 251 and rushing for 142 as Lone Star piled up 515 yards of total offense. Braxton Wambach added 114 yards on the ground to round out the attack.
The win keeps Lone Star undefeated at 4-0 and 1-0 in district play, holding steady at No. 7 in the state rankings. Melissa drops to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in district, a tough result in a game that was there for the taking.
