Guyer Erupts in Third Quarter, Blows Past Wakeland 35-7
Wakeland did everything right early and still found itself trailing. Guyer flipped the script in a huge way, exploding for three third-quarter touchdowns on the way to a 35-7 win in the District 5-6A opener at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex.
Wakeland came out of the gate moving the chains with ease, converting twice on third down and twice more on fourth, controlling the ball for over 10 minutes in the first quarter alone. Somehow, it still trailed 7-0 heading into the second, and things only got worse from there. Guyer’s defense completely locked things down, holding Wakeland to just 23 total yards across six straight possessions spanning the rest of the first quarter through the start of the fourth.
Guyer wasted no time setting the tone, needing just four plays to cover 80 yards on its opening drive, Jayden Thomas scoring on a 19-yard reverse. Carter Morgan added a 21-yard touchdown pass to Zane Rowe early in the second quarter to push the lead to 14-0.
The third quarter is where things really got out of hand. Kash Villegas punched in a one-yard touchdown to make it 21-0, then Kash Bird added a short plunge of his own before Villegas struck again from nine yards out, pushing the lead to 35-0 heading into the fourth. Three straight possessions, three straight touchdowns.
Wakeland avoided the shutout with a 13-yard touchdown run from Braxton Cole in the fourth, but the damage was already done.
Guyer wasn’t perfect either, committing seven penalties and missing two field goals in the first half, but the Wildcats still managed 275 total yards and showed off their explosive playmaking all night. The win is a nice bounce back for a Guyer team coming off a tough loss to Waxahachie, moving to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in district. Wakeland drops to 2-2 and 0-1 to start conference play.
