Westlake Picks Off Round Rock Three Times, Rolls 38-17
Three interceptions in the first half. Twenty-eight straight points. Westlake made its District 25-6A opener look easy, dropping Round Rock 38-17 at Chaparral Stadium in the first district meeting between these programs since 1987.
The Chaps got the early jump from the defense. Hank Fredenburg and Freddie Tester each came up with a pick in the opening quarter, and Weston Merriman added a third before the half. Maxwell Kubena put Westlake on the board with a 52-yard field goal, and Round Rock tied it at 3-3 before the avalanche hit.
Braden Riddell was the spark, scoring from 7 and 17 yards out in the second quarter and finishing with 108 yards from scrimmage and two rushing touchdowns. Patton Jones then found Caden Berry on a 19-yard touchdown with 35 seconds left in the half, sending Westlake to the break up 24-3.
The second half opened the same way. Jones punched in a 2-yard score to cap a 72-yard drive, and the lead swelled to 31-3. CJ Jones tacked on a 7-yard touchdown run, crossing the 100-yard mark in the process and finishing with 113 yards on the ground.
Jones was steady behind center, throwing for 205 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing score of his own.
Round Rock finally found life late in the third. Dov Stickler hit Garrett Creech for a 15-yard touchdown to end a 75-yard drive, and Charlie McDonald added a 7-yard run in the final seconds. Stickler finished with 218 yards through the air, but the Dragons did not punt until the fourth quarter and still never threatened the lead.
Westlake improves to 4-1 and 1-0 in district play and travels to Westwood next. Round Rock falls to 4-2 and 1-1 and heads into an off week.
