Robinson Escapes Brownwood 20-14 on Late Terry Touchdown
Close one in Robinson. The Rockets held off Brownwood 20-14 Friday night after a 4-yard touchdown pass from Brice McCurdy to Brayden Terry with 1:55 left, in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Brownwood did everything right for most of the night. The Lions’ defense held Robinson 24 points below its season average and to a season-low in points. Trailing 7-0 in the second quarter, they got a big break when a Robinson touchdown was wiped out by holding, back-to-back sacks followed, and a field goal try was blocked by Wyatt Wolf. Brownwood then went 92 yards in 13 plays, with Trent Buffington scoring from 4 yards out before the half.
The Lions opened the second half with a 14-play, 72-yard drive, and Buffington punched in a 6-yard score for a 14-7 lead. He finished with 176 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Robinson tied it on McCurdy’s 2-yard run late in the third. Then came the finish. Brownwood tried to run out the clock with a drive that ate 4:33 but came up empty on a stuffed third-and-2 and an incomplete pass on fourth. McCurdy hit Dylan Medlock for 46 yards to set up the winning score. Isaac Gonzales blocked the extra point, but on the Lions’ next drive Riggs Gray was intercepted and the Rockets ran out the clock.
McCurdy threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns and added 43 yards and a score on the ground. Brownwood managed just 16 passing yards and 217 on the ground.
Brownwood hosts Gatesville next week for homecoming. Gatesville is coming off a 58-0 loss to No. 2 La Vega.
