Cedar Park Grinds Down Vandegrift 23-10 to Stay Unbeaten
Smash-mouth football on a windy night. Cedar Park ran 70 plays to Vandegrift’s 49 and wore the Vipers down, winning 23-10 to go 8-0 and 4-0 and take a big step toward the District 24-6A title.
Vandegrift struck first on a 15-yard Preston James run, but the Timberwolves took over from there. Big plays were rare. David Cooper’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Brayden Jahns was the only real chunk, and only one of Cedar Park’s 52 runs went longer than 10 yards. It did not matter. The Timberwolves just kept pounding.
Two drives told the story. In the second quarter, Cedar Park ran 18 times on a 19-play march from its own 25 to the Vipers’ 4, then settled for a Jack Girardeau field goal. To open the third, it ran 14 times on a 17-play drive to the 2 and came away empty. Offensive lineman Brock Bungo called it “six seconds of toughness” on every snap.
Lucas Viloria did the dirty work with 82 yards on 28 carries. Kysen Pham added 38 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown that sealed it, and Cooper chipped in 48 on the ground. With the wind killing the deep game, Cooper went 15 of 18 for 178 yards, including 12 of his last 13, to keep the defense honest. Girardeau hit three field goals.
The defense did its part, holding Vandegrift to 242 yards and keeping it off the board in the second half. James ran for 121 yards but lost a fumble that became a field goal, and Evan Williamson left with an injury early. C.J. Rogers ended the Vipers’ last threat with an interception in the end zone.
Vandegrift falls to 4-3 and 2-1 in district.
